Hikmah, meaning "wisdom," empowers Somali-American families by mentoring them to achieve educational success, connecting them to vital resources, and advocating for equity and inclusion in schools, building a stronger and more inclusive community.
Our Approach
Our tutoring WISDOM is based on personalized instruction, individual attention, and ongoing communication. Here at HIKMAH, we're flexible and focus on student success. We let kids be kids, and have some fun!
WE LOVE WHAT WE DO
Mentorship
Cultural and linguistic diversity can create challenges for immigrant parents and students in district schools, hindering integration and deepening community divides. Hikmah addresses this through its Youth Enrichment Program (YEP), offering tutoring and structured Math and Reading curricula for students. Additionally, Hikmah supports parents by:
- Helping them navigate the public-school system and understand the impact of education quality.
- Encouraging participation in tutoring.
- Facilitating communication between parents and social agencies.
- Providing training workshops to access online grade books.
Community Resource
Hikmah seeks collaboration to foster solutions with other community- based organization and social services agencies in the community. These include:
• County social services
• Public school
• Law enforcement
• Adult education centers
• Health care provides
• Employment
• Legal aid
• Housing authority
• Other non-profit organizations.
Hikmah believes building strong working relationship with these organizations significantly benefits the mission of Hikmah.
Equity Broker
We know that a holistic approach to equity dramatically effects the outcome of students in their educational attainments and housing experience.
Hikmah works to develop an oportunity for disadvantage community members to stabilize their foundation with:
